The tower of the St Nicholas cathedral

The tower of the St Nicholas cathedral

The Cathedral of St. Nicholas is one of the oldest sacral objects of Elbląg. The raw, gothic interior of the church gives one the chance to experience the breath of the past. It is a three nave, hall type temple with a double span presbytery. It was rebuilt over the centuries, including the works after the great fire of April 1777, which started after a lightning strike, and also after war damages of February 1945. The more interesting historic artifacts that can be admired in the monumental temple include the bronze font of 1387, made by master Bernhauser and the altars founded by the guilds of Elbląg craftsmen: Vistula rafters, brewers, shoemaking apprentices. The temple is also a Sanctuary of Relics of the Holy Cross.

The tower of the cathedral offers a beautiful panorama of the city and its vicinity. It takes ca. 20 minutes to climb the tower. The vista point is open from May till mid October (Tuesday - Friday 10:00-17:00, Saturday 10:00-14:00, Sunday 14:00-17:00).
